London MC | DOUBLE CUP KASE | Drops New Single 'GOLDEN GUN' | We Talk Music & Hustling
The London native is an MC, singer and songwriter, and has spent the last few years mastering his craft, with creative collaborators in Paris, the States and his hometown alike. With more music on the way this year, as well as ‘Behind the scenes’ content and freestyles, Kase shows no signs of slowing down, setting himself up for a fruitful 2021.
Making the most of his whirlwind year, Double Cup Kase is back with the video to his incendiary single ‘Golden Gun’ - the second visual offering from his latest project ‘O.DD’.
Directed by Gregor Emmanuel, the video follows Kase performing the track at various locations around his block. Surrounded by his boys, Kase spits on the code he lives by and the bond he shares with his close circle. “If I take out your bro, it’ll be a lonely one. Two young bucks in the four-door cruising with the Golden Gun. Tiger Wood man’s block, I’m just tryna put a hole in one”. The track itself was produced by TimeLvpseBeats, featuring a catchy piano melody and thumping bass that is fast becoming synonymous with Kase’s music, sonically tying it to the rest of the project.
Listening to your music sounds like a mix of raw and rough UK artists like Abracadabra and Dutchavelli combined with beats reminiscent of US musicians like Pop Smoke and Travis Scott. What musicians did you and your friends listen to growing up?
Ghetts, Kano, Giggs, Beres Hammond, SIzzler, Ninja Man, and a lot of rare groove artists. My mum was a mad music head. She’d have food cooking and music pumping, no matter what the mood.
You talked about having three jobs in Up Front Freestyle. What was life like for you growing up in London before you had a record deal?
Firstly I don’t have a record deal… but I appreciate the gas. I was hustling init. Making money. Working, trapping, working, trapping. It was difficult. Working three jobs, getting fired from the best job. So when I found a way to indulge in what I want to do, I had to do that. The fact I have options is peace of mind.
In your latest album OD.D the beats and vocals have a lot of variety and you showcase that you aren’t a one-dimensional artist, and through social media, you show a lot of BTS and freestyles. Do you feel that it is important for you to experiment with different sounds and styles and show this progression with your fanbase?
Do you think The Rock would be the size he is if he didn’t train in the gym? Mo Farrah can’t run that fast without the right training, you get me. So I see it as training.
Golden Gun is the second video you’ve released from OD.D. In this track, you state your postcode and the importance of it to you and your circle. Other artists like Bugzy Malone and JME also reference their postcodes in their music. Do you think people should look beyond postal codes?
Yeah. When I mentioned my postcode it wasn’t so people gave a fuck. You never see me in a war for a postcode. But for me, it states the context of where I come from. If anyone looks into where I live... it was grotty. Fucked up.
When you talk about ‘perfecting my artistry’ in Big Checks, what does this process look like for you?
Train, train, train. Studio, write, songs. I’m fully submerged in music. At my last job I was working well, and one day I had to choose between a show and working, and I chose the show.
It’s alluring to hear you mix French verses in some of your music. Do you enjoy collaborating with international artists? Are there any artists that you hope to collaborate in the near future?
Hell yeah. I and norscace got more to come. And with a producer called Amnezzia. There are a couple of people from the states I wanna work with. But I don’t look ahead too far, it’s about who I bump into and connect with. I’d like to chop it up with Spyro and Ghetts one day, Kano, and Freddie Gibbs. If I can get Freddie Gibbs on a feature, that’d sit well with my soul still. And Willow Smith one day, amazing.
It’s sad to hear about the passing of Baytrilla who produced for artists like yourself, Ocean Wisdom, Swamp81 and Sleazeworld. How was it working with him for the production of Big Checks and My Valentine?
It was working beautifully man, as everyone can hear. I got two more legendary hits left with him. I spoke with his mum and shit. We’ll go with them ones, including 'Mad' which you’ll hear soon.
You mention that you weren’t raised by your father. Is this something that you want to change being a father yourself now and how do you mix work and parenting?
It works well. My daughter loves my art and life is life... you got to get on with it. She’s already involved in music, she helped me write Passion and Changes on OD business.
What is your next project now that OD.D has been released?
We’ve got a part 2… might drop a single from it this year but we will see. COVID’s made it harder to connect with fans, we can be on live but we’re not live in the flesh. Overseas shows and travelling are done, I was meant to be in America right now.
Do you enjoy working on the vocals or the visuals more when it comes to your music?
Both. They work hand in hand. They’ve both got their tedious sides but I love both of them.
